But
in the lead-up to the public New Year's Eve celebration at Broad Street
Park, there's also some fancy footwork going on behind the scenes. A
team of volunteers and staff with Zion Lutheran Church — assisted by
local business owners — are busy collecting new shoes that will help
local families in need in the new year.Plain coloured ear cap made from highly elastic allergy-free silicone,

Ephrata Area Social Services and Peter's Porch during 2013.
Peter's
Porch is an outreach program of Zion Lutheran that provides free
breakfast, a clothing giveaway and groceries to community members on the
third Saturday morning of each month.
"We recognize that there
are people who have basic material needs, neighbors," said Pastor
Matthew Lenahan. "This is a tremendous opportunity to take care of our
community, especially the kids in our community. Shoes are expensive and
they wear out."

Last
year, organizers provided 500 hot dogs and ran out. Coordinator Barb
McMinn is hoping attendance is strong again heading into 2013.
"As long as Mother Nature cooperates," she said. "Last year, she was very good."
Akron
Mayor John McBeth said the event is sponsored largely by Good's
Disposal and Ephrata National Bank. He also expects a high turnout for
this year's celebration, which also includes a church service at Grace

But
McBeth said shoe donations have fallen off slightly over the last two
years. He hoped that drawing more attention to the collection effort
would bring in more shoes. Signs promoting the event alert prospective
revelers that they can bring a pair of new shoes with them to the park
and donate them the night of the shoe-drop.
Tracy Lagaza, Zion
Lutheran secretary, said the need remains strong, with about 150 to 175
families from around Lancaster County attending Peter's Porch each
month. Lenahan said shoes are distributed locally and even within the
congregation. Last year, he was able to pass on a pair of sneakers
donated on New Year's Eve to a 9-year-old parishioner with worn soles
and faulty Velcro straps.
"We're kind of the middle man," Lenahan said. "We receive people's generosity, and we receive people's needs."
