who would like to help the family can contribute
The friend of a family left
victimized by a fire at their Dothan home earlier this week said the survivors
of the fire are on their way to recovery.
Brian Robertson said he spoke to his friend, Leonard Jermaine “Pops” Harvey, who he said has been taken off a ventilator. He said Leonard Jermaine Harvey Jr. is also talking and recovering from his injuries, along with Melissa Harvey.
Dothan firefighters responded to a house fire at 205 Ginnalou Dr ive around 11 p.m. Monday. Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd said the fire took the lives of two children in the home, 4-year-old Byron Harvey and 1-year-old Ariel Harvey.
Dothan Fire Marshal Chris Etheredge has said two of the three adult victims injured in the fire were hospitalized in Birmingham.
Area residents who would like to help the family can contribute through the Wiregrass area Red Cross chapter or through a special memorial account set up in memory of Ariel and Byron Harvey.
Robertson said relatives set up a memorial account in Ariel and Byron Harvey’s names to help with funeral expenses. Residents can help by making contributions at area Wells Fargo bank branches.
“They’re starting to get on the road to recovery,” Robertson said. “They didn’t have insurance.”
Susan Holmes, executive director of the Wiregrass chapter of the American Red Cross, said they will be ready to assist the family when they’re released from the hospital.
“It sounds like the community will be wrapping their arms around these people and we’ll be able to do that as well,” Holmes said. “We’ll be able to assist if they need a place to go, if they need clothing or food.”
Holmes said the Red Cross helps provide for families who’ve suffered losses from house fires across a five-county region. She said they typically make sure the families have a safe place to stay, and are provided with clothing, including winter coats and shoes if needed.
Holmes said there’s also mental health counseling to make sure the families know what they need to do for their recovery.
Holmes said anyone who would like to help can contribute to the local Red Cross. She said all contributions will be distributed locally.
“We’re providing the immediate need and the mental health component,” Holmes said. “We can’t replace lives… but the stuff we can replace.”
If you buy margarine from your local Tesco, it’s likely that Dr Estelle Gaudier will have had a hand in it - so to speak. She is one of Unilever’s top food scientists.
