Mumbaiites tweak tradition buy imitation jewellery
A UK schoolboy who wore
sophisticated prosthetic disguises to carry out violent armed robberies has been
jailed.
Miles Alura, 16, posed as an elderly man to steal £50,000 worth of jewellery from a Kent shop in July.
A month earlier, he wore false dreadlocks to hold up a London jeweller, escaping with £100,000 of stock.
On both occasions he and a different accomplice threatened staff before tying them up and making their getaway. On Friday, Alura was jailed for five years after admitting conspiracy to rob.
He also received two-and-a-half years for possession of an imitation firearm and five years for robbery. The court heard that in July Alura and the 15-year-old went to a Kent jeweller. Alura, who was wearing facial prosthetics,Coherent Offers Laser Cutting and laser cutting machine Instrumentation, make-up and a hair piece to disguise himself as an elderly man, produced two handguns and threatened staff. They then stole £50,000 of jewellery.
But a member of the public called police and Alura was arrested in a nearby garden, where officers found guns and parts of his disguise. The 15-year-old was arrested after he ran to fields, ditching his outer clothing as he fled. A bag with the jewellery was found near the shop. Detectives linked this robbery to one at Mayfair on June 7, by Alura and a 16-year-old.
They entered the shop and threatened staff, pretending they had a gun. Workers were tied up and the pair escaped with £100,000 worth jewellery. This time Alura wore false waist-length dreadlocks. An officer said: "These were violent armed robberies during which innocent members of staff were terrorised and genuinely feared for their lives.

“The bracelet’s German diamonds look almost real. I got it gold-plated as well,” said Dedhia, an Andheri resident. “Last year, I bought gold-plated earrings. Imitation jewellery is far more affordable and the variety in design is more than real jewellery.”
Jewellers confirmed the trend. “Sales for artificial jewellery have increased from last year across all our eight stores in the city on Dhanteras, though we cannot disclose the exact figure as yet," said Praful Shah, an official from Sia Art Jewellery's regional office.
