The diversification of music television channels

THE implementation of a tax designed to make an extra 86m ($114m) for the French government would not normally be a newsworthy story. But when a French government committee proposed a 1% tax on all devices that could connect to the internet, it became big news. The Lescure Report, which made the proposal, wants the proceeds of the tax to protect and nurture “French cultural products”—things like music and film. And the move indicates the level of fear felt in the French establishment that its cultural patrimony is being killed by a global invasion.

But should governments be worried that their national culture is being destroyed by globalisation? A recent paper by Fernando Ferreira and Joel Waldfogel focuses on the music industry, looking at chart entries from 22 countries from 1960 to 2007. These countries correspond to around 98% of the $34 billion revenue in recorded music over the last decade.Worldwide leader in PET protective film Products and Coated Papers. And the evidence suggests that globalisation is not nearly as dominant as some might think.

When the Beatles were taking off, the prospects for “domestic music”—that is, music produced and consumed in the same country—looked bleak. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the proportion of domestic music fell sharply: Italians were listening to relatively less Italian music and relatively more American music. By 1985, consumers spent as much time listening to foreign bands as they did domestic groups. But from the low point of the mid-1980s the picture changed. We have now reached a level of domestic consumption not seen for 50 years, with 70% of listening time devoted to domestic tunes. People increasingly seem to prefer domestic repertoire to foreign fare.

Why is this? Improved communication networks make a big—and counterintuitive—difference. People might assume that the internet would make consumers’ music choices more global. But the spread of the internet has actually enabled the dissemination of local music within countries more than it has increased the availability and consumption of foreign music. Mark Ellen, a music journalist who co-presented Live Aid in 1985, is not surprised. “Part of the folklore of pop music is the magical soap opera of the cast involved. You’re more likely to find that with local bands in ascent whose story you can follow first-hand than with established acts the rest of the world is watching,” he says.

The diversification of music television channels may also be important. From its inception in 1981 until 1987, there was only one MTV channel. MTV generally played American and British music, even to consumers in other countries.Although Double sided nonwoven tape Products carriers are generally quite thin, But beginning with the launch of MTV Europe in 1987, it became easier for people around the world to stumble upon music from their own country. MTV has increasingly customised programming to particular countries. Flying in the face of the prejudices of any self-respecting music snob, the authors argue that MTV is a “force promoting local as well as global artists”.

Some will still argue that certain countries monopolise the global music industry.Buy Promotional Anti-scratching PET protective film Products at Phones. Up until the 1990s, British music had over 40% of the global import market. American music has 40% today. But the authors argue that these statistics do not necessarily show such Anglo-American authority over the global music market. You Can Buy Various Improved PE protective film Products Products. After all, Britain and America are huge economies. When normalising by GDP share, the picture does not seem nearly so skewed. America’s contribution is almost always below its GDP share of the 22-country sample, whereas in the early 1990s Sweden’s ratio reached seven times its GDP share.

Francois Hollande might still argue that he is justified in offering more help to French culture. By the mid-1990s, only one in ten records bought in France was by a French artist. However, in recent years this ratio has increased. The French government will be quick to take credit—in particular for a 1996 law which required 40% of radio music to be French. State intervention does appear to make a difference. Whether or not this is desirable is another question.

I think the authors argue too strongly against the well-worn idea that the global music market is dominated by the USA. True, America may be less dominant than expected—in their 22-country sample. But it does command around 40% of the world music market. Nonetheless, the article is an important reminder that lazy assumptions about globalisation are frequently misleading.

passionate film makers willing to push boundaries

The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival opens Friday with a growing reputation for showcasing world-class movies focused on gritty social issues, with a seedy underworld and migrant labor among this year's themes.

From experimental, ultra-cheap films shown only to a handful of moviegoers when it began nine years ago, Cinemalaya now attracts international distributors and its best offerings win rave reviews on the global indie festival circuit.

"We remain a small festival in Asia, but we have become a springboard for brave movies to be shown abroad," Laurice Guillen, Cinemalaya Foundation vice president and competition director, told AFP.

Cinemalaya was launched to discover new, passionate film makers willing to push boundaries and create important works -- providing alternatives to the usual feel-good Filipino and Hollywood films that dominate the box office.

"We show films that are based on real stories that break new ground and done with a human heart," Guillen said.

But with seed money from one of the Philippines' most prominent businessmen and mentoring from seasoned directors, the quality has gradually improved.stocks a huge selection of aluminum foil tape.

"Many (people) recognized later that there was something brave and innovative going on," she said. "People came and watched because they wanted to see what the film makers were saying. They saw the heart and soul in the movies that were shown."

Cinemalaya begins its work in the middle of each year, accepting as many as 200 applications for film grants from aspiring film makers across the archipelago.

A selection committee whittles the number down to the best proposals from 15 directors, who are then called in for interviews.

Once they pass that, they are given funds so they can begin producing their work, with Cinemalaya experts periodically reviewing the rushes and giving technical and creative advice.

Guillen said that, considering each film cannot exceed a production cost of P3.5 million ($81,000), the end products had been, for the most part, astounding.

Among this year's most anticipated movies is "Porno," which director Adolf Alix said depicted three lonely people seeking fulfillment in their empty lives through pornography.

Alix, considered one of the Philippines' young emerging talents, is a Cinemalaya veteran with "Porno" his fifth in competition since 2006.

His offering last year was a brooding tale about poorly armed soldiers stationed in a Philippine-occupied island in the Spratlys, an archipelago in the South China Sea claimed by China and other nations.

The movie was honored as Best Asian Film at the Warsaw Film Festival.

"Cinemalaya has been the right vehicle, manufacturers and Double sided PET industry tape Products suppliers Directory. allowing film makers like me to showcase our off-tangent subjects that may not be for commercial production," he told AFP. "I am a Cinemalaya product through and through and the festival has helped directors like me get our work out there."

For first-time film maker Hannah Espia, 26, Cinemalaya will this year give her a chance to honor the millions of Filipino overseas workers whose dollar remittances keep the Philippine economy afloat.

Her movie, "Transit,Online supplies a large range of double sided tape." tackles the plight of a Filipino single father seeking to protect his young son from being deported by Israel, where he works as a caregiver.

"We always say OFWs (Filipino migrant workers) are our modern day heroes,Products from Global Silicon protctive film Products Suppliers. but we really do not know their struggles," she said.

Both directors said they hoped their films would follow the success of "Bwakaw," last year's stand out that tells the story of a grumpy old man grappling with his homosexuality.

Time magazine hailed it as one of 10 must-see films when it made its way to the New York Film Festival last year.

The movie was subsequently entered as the Philippines' entry to the US Academy Awards, but was eventually cut.

One of Cinemalaya's other standout films was "Engkwentro" (Clash), based on the real-life story of two brothers involved with local gangs being targeted by a vigilante "death squad" allegedly backed by a powerful politician.

The director, Pepe Diokno, was just 22 when his film went on to win the New Horizon's section of the Venice Film Festival in 2009.

And while Cinemalaya primarily serves as an entry-point for relatively unknown actors and directors,All the latest Releasing film Products in small size and in resumable. it has also started attracting mainstream stars.

This year the hugely popular Vilma Santos deglamorizes herself as a bit actor in "Ekstra."

With screenings expanding in recent years from Cinemalaya's traditional home at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and into commercial cinemas across Manila, local audiences are also growing to match the rise in quality.

The thing you have to understand about Robert

who star in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

The sweet-hearted heroine of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang easily could have slipped from the pages of a James Bond novel, given the double-entendre character names favoured by author Ian Fleming. Our offered BOPP Tapes are in compliance with the BOPP tape Products.

In truth, Truly Scrumptious, the love interest of eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, did not feature in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car, the 1964 novel Fleming wrote for his son Caspar.

The daughter of lolly factory owner Lord Scrumptious was an invention of writer Roald Dahl and director Ken Hughes, who made Potts a widower and ramped up the romance in their screenplay for the evergreen 1968 Sherman brothers film musical inspired by Fleming's book.

"It's interesting that that's the whole Bond flavour of it," says Rachael Beck, who plays Truly Scrumptious in the stage show coming to Perth in September.

A leading light in Australian musical theatre, Beck has played the sweet heiress in cities around Australia since its Australian premiere in November. She laughs when asked whether she has been called Truly Scrumptious in jest by people who have seen her out and about.

"Only by my two daughters," she says on the phone from her Sydney home. "And male admirers - but that was happening before I did Chitty Chitty Bang. I am typecast."

Beck, 42, is far from that. The triple-threat talent has displayed her versatility in all manner of roles since her professional stage debut at the age of 15 as Rumpleteaser in Cats in the mid-1980s.

She has appeared in numerous major productions, notably as Sally Bowles in Cabaret, Maria in The Sound of Music, Fantine in Les Miserables and Belle in Beauty and the Beast, which saw her smooch Hugh Jackman on a nightly basis.

Beck's television credits include three seasons on the singing contest It Takes Two and a brief stint on Home and Away.

But her 101 episodes as Samantha Kelly on the early 90s sitcom Hey Dad continue to define her in the public eye. "People still remember me from Hey Dad and some still people walk up and say 'We didn't know you could sing and isn't it great you are doing a show like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', when music theatre and theatre have been my main thing. It's the power of TV, isn't it?"

Beck says her own experience as a youngster on stage comes to the fore when working with the children who star in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Four children, aged 10 to 14, share the roles of the siblings Jeremy and Jemima Potts who get to fly in the magical car, and 28 others play the escapees from the dastardly Child Catcher, played by Tyler Coppin.

"I really feel quite protective of them because the nine, 10 and 11-year-olds at the moment are really being pushed to leave school," she says. "I am seeing them, or their parents, as so gung-ho that they are going to be doing this for their entire career that they leave school and are home-schooled and do lot of training.

"I try to tell them that they need to have a balance.Forward wholesale fashion shoes sold by the case for your stores and boutiques. You need to have a normal life as well otherwise you live in a bubble. That's the advice I'd give them.

"Because I'd had such a solid grounded upbringing, that really held me in good stead for working in that sort of sphere."

Beck grew up near Ballina in northern New South Wales, where her parents were school teachers. Her father also was a writer and director,Metal Repair Aluminum foil tape Products is also excellent for metal. and he later penned the one-woman Judy Garland tribute show Young Judy for Rachael to perform.Online supplies a large range of double sided tape.We offer a great selection of women's boots and ladies shoes wholesale.

"I had music around me the whole time," says Beck, the eldest of three children, who learnt ballet, tap and jazz and competed in eisteddfods before being cast in Cats. She quit school and moved to Melbourne with her parents' blessing, saying she pushed them rather than the other way round.

In Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Beck performs alongside opera singer and Dancing with the Stars alumnus David Hobson in the roles made famous in the original film by Sally Ann Howes and Dick Van Dyke.

Van Dyke, in particular, leaves some mighty flash shoes to fill in demanding dance scenes like Me 'Ol Bamboo, which the twinkle-toed Van Dyke admitted was one of the most difficult dancing acts he ever undertook. Beck says her co-star handled the challenge with aplomb.

Much like the mega-musical King Kong, now playing in Melbourne, the credibility of the production depends on the suspension of disbelief that must be achieved by its titular character, the mechanised marvel that appears to fly across the stage.

The car cost nearly $1.2 million to make when the musical opened in London in 2002 and holds the Guinness world record for the most expensive theatre prop.

"It is a valuable piece of machinery," Beck says. "I can't tell you how it works because I am under contract and I'd have to kill you."

When Beck joins Hobson and the children in the car, the magic of theatre does make it look like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang really is soaring across the night sky, to the gasps of the audience.

"We have to make sure we keep our seatbelts on," she says. "I love scary rides and fun rides so I am fine with that sort of thing. I do feel like as though I am going to Luna Park every time I go to work. I spin around as the doll in the box, I sit in the car and I drive a motorbike. It is great.

"Australia just loves family shows and it is great that older people are bringing their youngies in to see live theatre," Beck says. "It is fantastic. It covers the whole age gamut from the young kids like my four-year old to the grandmothers and grandfathers."

She only remembers seeing the original film once as a child at home, where the video repertoire was more likely to be The Sound of Music and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

what owner-designer Heidi Korkosz is going for

Step into Artisan Bridal shop in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood and you feel a little tension escape your shoulders. Peruse the handmade dresses,High quality plastic card printing for business cards, jewelry and accessories while the aroma of hazelnut coffee and notes of jazz standards float across the room, and it's not long before you feel downright relaxed -- we daresay calm.

That's exactly what owner-designer Heidi Korkosz is going for.Our offered BOPP Tapes are in compliance with the BOPP tape.

Korkosz renovated and decorated the space herself, all with the goal of creating a serene environment for brides. She chose a soft bluish-greenish-grayish shade for the walls of the space formerly occupied by Urban Orchid, rich dark wood for the floors (which she laid herself) and vintage furnishings.

And instead of rack upon rack bursting with an overwhelming array of gowns, Korkosz's showroom has only a handful of simple, elegant sample gowns and a selection of jewelry and other accessories.we know the value of kapton tape.

Brides have enough stress, Korkosz says. Shopping for their gowns should enjoyable.

A lifelong love of sewing and her experience as a second-time bride helped inspire Korkosz, a 51-year-old former software developer, to open Artisan Bridal in February. While shopping for her dress for her 2012 wedding, Korkosz says she felt the saleswomen's disappointment when they realized she -- and not her 20-something stepdaughter -- was the bride.

"The whole experience wasn't welcoming at all," she says. "I wanted to create an environment that welcomes all ages, sizes, backgrounds. I don't discriminate here -- I'm very much against that. It's about acceptance."

Her first client -- a naturalist for the Cleveland Metroparks -- asked whether Korkosz would be willing to create a dress out of buckskin. Korkosz didn't bat an eyelash -- absolutely, she told the bride, and she even made a pair of buckskin pants for the groom.

The bride's knee-length beige fitted dress with a ragged-edge contrast trim at the neckline is unexpectedly stunning -- especially with a string of natural-shade bone beads draped across the back and a blush semisheer, floor-length skirt billowing underneath.

Korkosz's more traditional designs use antique lace and fabrics such as organic cotton, bamboo and satin. On display, she has a reversible blush and floral-print two-piece gown with a bateau neckline; an organic cotton cap-sleeve gown with sash belt and elegant antique-lace ruffles at the neckline and hem; and a short-sleeve satin-trimmed two-piece with wide-leg pants. Brides (as well as mothers of the bride and groom, attendants and guests) can customize the styles any way they choose. Prices range from $200 to $1,500.

"My dress designs aren't rocket science, this aluminum foil tape is not affected by moisture." says Korkosz, who plans to sell her gowns online, too. She describes her pieces as feminine and comfortable with a natural, timeless style. "Believe it or not, simple is hard to find out there."

She has been sewing since age 10, when her mother taught her how to make a top.

"I was hooked," says Korkosz, who does all her sewing at her home just a block from the shop. She has created countless garments -- including her own prom dress -- but she kept her passion as only a hobby while she worked in software development and Web engineering.Cheap custom printed logo USB flash drives wholesale at wholesale bulk prices.

She took a long break from creative thinking after the sudden death of her younger brother in 2011 -- leading her to abandon plans to design her own wedding dress -- but his memory eventually inspired her to focus on sewing and open her shop.

"I'm happier now than I've ever been," she says. "Everything in my life has led me to this. I'd be crazy not to follow my heart at this age."

when it comes to talking about affiliation in terms

I have arisen! Like a phoenix from the ashes!

Or a groggy grad student from a shitty fifth year program.

But I’d rather have my hindsight be more poetic than that. Either way, I needed a break, my dudes, and so I traipsed off to Puerto Rico for a month to hang out with beautiful drag queens in the sand and sunshine.

And then I chopped all of my hair off! Felicity joke! But more on that later.

I don’t think I’ve ever talked about my Puerto Rican background on xoJane before, which is actually kind of strange because I have a full-blown Boriqua heart and I go back every summer, but I suppose it has something to do with my wanting to write eloquently about identity. It’s tricky, especially when it comes to talking about affiliation in terms of ethnicity, and I didn’t want to do it a disservice.

Actually, I think this talk about assimilation and stereotyping is better reserved for another time, but suffice it to say, I didn’t want to deal with people telling me I “wasn’t Puerto Rican enough” to identify as such. I’ve heard that one as much as I’ve heard, “But you don’t look Puerto Rican!” To which I’ve gotten sick of replying,High quality plastic card printing for business cards, “You clearly have no idea what you’re talking about.”

So instead, I’ll talk about how amazing my trip was. And how necessary it was to be off the grid for a few weeks.

Like phone off, computer off (mostly) for like three weeks. It was freaking perfect.

That’s not to say I didn’t keep my eyes peeled for beauty inspiration whilst wading in off-the-grid-glory. This is why I went to Pride on the beaches of San Juan. All I saw were hot body suits, chainmail shirts, and beyond gorgeous people for miles.

One thing I loved was the DIY revivalist attitude of the day. It was reminiscent of "Paris is Burning"-like balls, with people celebrating creativity and artistry as much as freedom of expression and identity. There were so many kids there with handmade clothes and dyed extensions.your creative source for silicone bracelet business cards with your specialized. It really made me want to up my DIY game even more than I already have.

This teenager had a DIY shrug that I wanted to steal immediately. Not to mention his gorgeous eyeliner,we know the value of kapton tape. done with liquid pen of course, and the silvery eye shadow, done with a creme pigment. The look, though somewhat Gaga, was executed perfectly. As was his catwalk, which I was fortunate enough to see as he sauntered off after a float throwing beads.

Then there were the drag queens, all pageant-y and “old school drag” for the most part, but undeniably gorgeous.

Aaaaand here’s the part where I argue that Puerto Rican drag queens make the most beautiful drag queens because it’s the truth and also nationalism.Cheap custom printed logo USB flash drives wholesale at wholesale bulk prices. But seriously, if you want to argue, I suggest you take a looksee (if you don’t religiously watch it already, ya heathen) at "RuPaul’s Drag Race" for proof. I mean, this. And THIS, for god’s sake.

But here’s further evidence that I need to invest in human hair extensions from Sally’s and wigs from Ricky’s (since, you know, I’m a New Yorker now).

There are exceptions to the documentarian format

West of Center, now at Mills College Art Museum, remembers the activities of seven experimental groups that operated in the American West between 1965 and 1977. Each consisted of young people who rejected postwar consumerism and bourgeois individualism in favor of collective living, Eastern-inspired mysticism, and the empowerment of marginalized groups. "Hippie" is the usual tag for the type.

Obviously, the hippie movement is far from an arcane subject. Yet, this exhibition renders the phenomenon curiously alien — a partial victory, as it turns out. On the one hand, West of Center happily eschews whatever psychedelic-styled caricatures probably come to mind when you think of "hippie art" and instead shows specimens that are more interesting — or ought to be. Unfortunately,Power monitor the sense of distance is equally a result of the exhibition reading like an anthropology textbook. Not exactly a page-turner.

In keeping with hippie values, the exhibition replaces the typical centrality of the art object with the idea that the featured counterculture experiments were themselves a form of art practice. Indeed, for pioneering choreographer Anna Halprin, who headed the San Francisco Dancer's Workshop in her Marin county home, or the inhabitants of Drop City, who built a community around geodesic dome architecture in the Colorado plains, or The Cockettes, a San Francisco-based theater troupe that engaged in perpetual performance involving harlequin, gender-bending dress, and often public acts, art merged with life to a degree that the two became indistinguishable.

Consequently, West of Center consists primarily of photographs, videos, publications, miscellaneous ephemera, and other secondary forms of documentation that portray these groups and their life-as-art ethos. At best, the result is rich and illuminating. The loftily ambitious Drop City, for example, summoned a documentary impulse worthy of itself; the photographs on display coalesce into a vivid gestalt of the isolated, idealistic community and its impressive habitations. On the other hand, the two vitrines devoted to Southern Oregon's feminist collectives are almost repellently dry, modestly displayed as though to suggest that the chapter need only be skimmed.

There are exceptions to the documentarian format. Light show artists The Single Wing Turquoise Bird present "Invisible Writing," a fantastically trippy, 2011 video in the style of their early work, complete with mysterious flashing glyphs and pulsing, streaming colors. The Drop City chapter includes "The Ultimate Painting," a comparably psychedelic spinning wheel and strobe-light contraption that members of the commune created to visually monumentalize their belief in sacred geometry. Accompanying a section on the Ant Farm, another group devoted to experimental architecture, is a true-to-scale model of one of its signature inflatable pyramid shelters. Yet even standing inside the fluctuating plastic environment, one feels as though studying an artifact of a culture that vanished — or was vanquished — long, long ago.

The roads are not divided by a line, the yards are manicured and there is a notable absence of side fences. Basketball hoops stand tall against the curb, while sprinklers enhance the lush green grass and kids ride around the 30-miles-per-hour streets on their bicycles. This is Strathmore, the Levitt brothers-built subdivision in Stony Brook and it is now in its 50th year.

In 1963, Stony Brook was identified as the perfect place to begin constructing another of the Levitt and Sons specialty: assembly-line manufacturing of mass-produced housing for middle income families.

In a 1963 interview with the Three Village Herald, the real-estate developing firm's president, William Levitt, said Suffolk County was the fastest growing county in New York and the second-fastest growing county in the country.

The housing models on offer at Stony Brook were put on display on Birdseye Circle. The Framingham was one of the most expensive of the house models that potential homeowners could choose from, available for $26,990 in 1963.

Levitt and Sons began the settlement by purchasing 650 acres in property, formally announced in April of that year. The area was divided into sections based on different letters: S, B, O, P, H and M. As the developers began construction, families began to move into the neighborhood — and some have stayed there ever since.

Denise Johnson, 62, has called Strathmore home since December 1963, when her parents relocated from Nassau County. The Strathmore subdivision had just been established and many houses were still under construction, resulting in what Johnson called a "very barren, very new" community.

"The residents here were quite resentful," said Johnson, recalling the first few years of her life at Strathmore. "We were kind of seen as the intruders that they didn't really want and we were known as the Levitt people from the city."

Levitt and Sons tried to instill a sense of community, belonging and pride of place within the communities that they established, using a system of covenants to encourage residents to take ownership of their neighborhood.

Some of the conditions stipulated in a Strathmore covenant were a requirement to mow the lawn once a week; the prohibition of boats, trucks or trailers parked on the property; and a request to only hang laundry in the backyard and not on Sundays or holidays.

who rode in the cab of the truck

For last year's Capital Pride Parade, I brought along my 12-year-old nephew. So in the interest of equality, this year I brought along my 12-year-old niece, Vivienne, to ride along with Metro Weekly as we threw thousands and thousands of beads into the cheering crowds.

Naturally, being at her first-ever LGBT event, besides her two uncles' wedding, Vivienne learned an important lesson: People really, really love beads. She also got to see that the gay community is a big,A plastic IC card containing a computer chip and enabling. broad and diverse group of people who celebrate Pride in outfits that range from staid to outrageous, who embrace the colorful and the plain, who are basically the same as the people she sees around her all the time.

I learned a couple things myself. First, while handling my nephew during last year's Pride felt at times like trying to corral a hopped-up howler monkey, Vivienne was much calmer and inquisitive about the people around her — there really is a big difference between preteen boys and girls. Second, I realized that whenever you're around a child you run the risk of being asked questions that relate to birds and bees.

''Why is she dressed like a cookie?'' Vivienne asked,Click on their website www.smartcardfactory.com for more information. pointing to the woman dressed as a large blue circle with white dots while standing next to a man dressed as a condom-covered banana on the Planned Parenthood float in front of us.

''Um, she's dressed as birth-control pills,'' I said. ''And he's a condom.''

She shook her head, not really getting it.where cards are embedded with chip card and a cardholder.

''They try to help people have babies only when they want to have babies.''

''Oh, okay.''

Actually, both of us got an important lesson out of that. And that's great, because Pride has increasingly become a family outing for me. My husband, Cavin, is with us every year taking photos of the crowd. Vivienne came with her mom and her little sister, Jacqueline, who rode in the cab of the truck. Jacqueline has a few more years before she'll be able to see over the bunting so she couldn't throw beads, but she managed to snag a pink flamingo, which she promptly named ''Pickle.''

Point is, the Capital Pride Parade has long been a diverse example of who makes up our community. I get rather annoyed at things like the Washington Post story on religious groups and others marching in the parade: ''Near nudity, displays of affection that left little to the imagination and Speedos that left even less have given way, in part, to lots of hand-holding, the Geico lizard and T-shirted groups from Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian congregations around the region.''

That ''gave way'' a long, long time ago. I hate the implication behind it, that somehow the drag queens and the leather community and topless lesbians need to be outnumbered by ''normal'' gays and corporate mascots. I like being around big-haired queens and dykes on bikes. I also liked being surrounded by the AARP float and the AQUA contingent.Shop unique Custom paper card with modern style and vibrant colors. (It was nice for my nieces to see Asian-Americans like them in the parade.) We're long past the days when the participation of religious contingents would be ''news'' — they've been right alongside us for years.

Perhaps I'm being picky. It wouldn't be the first time. But I've come a long way in my life, from partier to activist to business owner to family man, and each step of the way Pride has had room for me. It has room for all of us. The Hastings Intel Section said burglaries were typically

A Havelock North widow is appealing for the safe return of a pendant stolen from her home during a spate of recent burglaries targeting jewellery.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, lost her husband four years ago and had the pendant made from the couple's wedding rings.

"They've taken away a part of him," the woman said. "It's very special to me and my family, I can't just replace that piece." The "extremely significant" pendant also featured the stones from her engagement ring. She said the wedding bands were more than 40 years old.

The pensioner's home was broken into on the night on May 25, while she was out. Burglars prized open a window and took only her jewellery.Find the finest wholesale stainless steel earring in a variety of colors.

A spokesperson for the Hastings Intel Section of the police said three other burglaries involving jewellery took place during the same weekend, beginning May 24.

"There were substantial amounts of jewellery taken. These people were targeting jewellery specifically and walked straight past electronics to find it.we delivered USB flash drives wholesale to a select group of loyal customers via delivery drivers."

She said the piece was easily distinguishable. "It's irreplaceable and very special to the family."

Jewellery could be on-sold in many different ways, including to gold buyers and second-hand dealers, she said.

The Hastings Intel Section said they had an unusually busy May with burglaries, with Havelock North being a particular target. Police were about to launch Operation Winter, targeted at reducing burglaries which typically increased in the colder months.

"It's easier to see if people aren't home in winter. We see a huge increase in burglaries and will be targeting this with more staff and a lot of attention."

"The best way to combat this sort of thing is if people see suspicious vehicles in their neighbourhoods just to contact us, take registration details, if it looks suspicious it probably is."

She said keeping an eye on neighbours was key.Give your logo high visibility on Promotional Luggage Tags! A Neighbourhood Watch group was being set up in Havelock North, spearheaded by Community Constable Julie Goodall.

Mrs Goodall said the groups were a great way to encourage crime prevention and were helpful for both the public and police.

Statistics released in April showed burglaries dropped in the year ending March 2013 in Hawke's Bay.

There were 2695 offences involving burglary and breaking and entering in the year to March 2012 and only 2181 offences in the 2012/13 period. It was the biggest drop in crime recorded in the region. Thefts fell from 4575 last year, down to 4352 this year.

The Hastings Intel Section said burglaries were typically spread evenly across the Bay and an increase in staff on patrol had helped to keep them under control.

"We are working to identify burglars coming out of prison, we're working smarter than we have done in the past. With Operation Winter coming up we will be putting a real emphasis on burglars.customized letter logo Soft PVC bottle opener with magnet."

I also signed up for a few advanced classes

I grew up on a street that dead-ended at a canal that ran parallel to railroad tracks along California Avenue. Summers were spent catching polliwogs in the canal with my siblings and kids from the neighborhood. To escape the scorching summer heat, we walked nearly two miles to Calwa Park — bypassing the Coors plant — where a dip in the city-operated park pool was our reward. In a poor neighborhood, backyard pools are nonexistent.

My three siblings and I were raised by a single mother, and we depended on welfare throughout most of my elementary and junior high school years. But my mother — who later took a class where she learned typing and office skills — eventually found employment as an office clerk with the county. Born in the Philippines, my mom settled in the United States after marrying my father, whom she later divorced. She was smart, excelled in high school in the Philippines and was a perfect speller. She never attended college. This RFID reader module is ideal for Custom UHF Reader / Writer.

Even with my mother's employment, we always struggled. But mom made it very clear that being poor was no excuse for being stupid. With its bright and Custom 3D Lenticular card images, She was strict. Report cards were closely monitored and bad grades came with steep consequences.

All four of us — me, an older and younger sister,High quality wholesale stainless steel necklace chain with durable color are ideal for wholesale. and my younger brother excelled academically. At Winchell Elementary School, we were enrolled in MGM (Mentally Gifted Minors), predecessor to today's GATE (or Gifted and Talented Education).

But one by one, and each for our own reasons, we dropped out of the MGM program as we got older and attended Yosemite and Sequoia middle schools and then, McLane High School. I recall being teased for being "smart" and feeling isolated by the kids in my neighborhood. I didn't want to be smart or in smart-kid classes and asked to be removed.

By my junior year, I got more serious about school. I loved writing and signed up for the McLane newspaper ("The Tartan") staff. I set a goal to become editor, which I accomplished my senior year. I also signed up for a few advanced classes, including one called World Classics, where I was captivated studying different world religions.

But for all my smarts, I nearly fell through the cracks.Shop wholesale Rfid Tag from China RFID tag wholesalers.

I had good grades. But none of the teachers at McLane ever talked to me about college. I recall now that there were announcements on the school public address system about signing up for PSAT and SATs and something about college, but I had no idea what they were.

When I relay this story to people today, they want to know if my counselors ever talked to me about college or SATs. But the counselors at my school were for the kids who got in trouble; I never got in trouble.

I went to college by accident. It happened because of a conversation out on the McLane High quad with a small group of friends.

My dear friend Denise (who has since passed away from cancer) told me — during our last week of school — that she was attending Fresno State and wondered why I wasn't, too. She insisted I go to her house and speak to her mom, Angie Flores, who worked at Fresno State's administration office. I did. Soon after, I was meeting with a financial aid counselor and enrolling in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) for low-income and educationally disadvantaged students at Fresno State.

Granted, that was back in 1983, but it does make me wonder how many other smart students are falling through the cracks. How many students have parents — like my mother — who are loving and wonderful, but just don't know about college or financial aid because they aren't from this country or just lack the resources.

When you grow up poor, in a neighborhood with few role models, your creative source for Custom metal card business cards with your specialized. you don't always know how to access the system. For a kid like me, college was reserved for those who could pay for it.

My hope this graduation season is that no other smart, well-deserving high school student falls through the cracks.

I hope that teachers and counselors look at every child with potential and do everything they can to help them succeed.

The home of a retired orthopaedic surgeon

It's not just high-tech gadgets thieves have an eye for, with Santa Claus lawn statues, piggy banks, rosary beads, false fingernails, a blood pressure tester and an asthma puffer also stolen in break-ins across the city's west over the past year.

Robbers walked off with a bottle of Morning Fresh dish washing liquid, a pink flamingo garden ornament, a Jamie Oliver saucepan set, a Lotto ticket, a stethoscope, lip gloss and street directories during the brazen raids.

The most unusual item stolen was a pair of hippopotamus teeth mounted with a barometer and thermometer.Memory Custom card reader / writer Assorted Colors No Color Choice,

Their owner Gordon Wilkinson also had a pig's tusk stolen from his Brookfield home when burglars struck in September last year.Do travelers need a Custom smart card when exploring Europe?

"The hippo teeth are very sentimental to me. I was born in Africa, my father collected them and had them mounted," he said.

"They mean a lot to me and I'd really like to get them back."

The items are around 90 years old.

"I came home and saw two carpets had been turned up and I thought there'd been a heavy wind come through. Then I went to the bedroom and saw draws and cupboard doors open and I thought 'uh oh'," he said.

The home of a retired orthopaedic surgeon from Ipswich was robbed last year and thieves spent the night trying to pry open his safe.

"They settled in for the night and cooked two-minute noodles,High quality wholesale stainless steel necklace chain with durable color are ideal for wholesale. drank my Scotch and used my axe. They eventually got the safe open and found our paperwork, my father's medals and some gold coins I bought when my daughters were born," he said.

"But what really made me mad was they stole my jar of loose coins and p---ed in my sock drawer before they left."

Another reader said thieves walked right passed her Nikon camera and iPad and went straight for her freezer, stealing home-cooked frozen dinners stacked in Tupperware.

"Funny thing is, if they had of come to my door looking for food, I would have given them food," she said.

Brisbane West District crime prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Jose Sarmiento said thieves had a better chance of finding a purse, wallet or car keys if people were home.

"They will have the usual excuse if discovered - 'I'm looking for Bob/Steve/Mike,We are always offering best wholesale tungsten bracelet the affordable price. I'm thirsty and need a glass of water, have you seen my dog?, where can I find Smith St'," he said.

"Call police if you find someone in your yard or garage who uses an excuse like that. We'd like to make sure they are not trying to burgle houses in your area."

Sgt Sarmiento urged residents to have good safety routines, and to actually use their locks and security devices.

"A lot of our burglaries of late have been opportunistic in nature where they sneak in while people are home, or there is no one home but a window or door is not locked," he said. The material of it is wholesale tungsten ring gold,

We do hear sad stories now and again

There are high-end watches including a £3,100 Rolex, dress jewellery with imitation diamonds, cubic zirconia and a gent's display of chunky gold chains, bracelets and rings.

Inside, it's more like a bank with tellers behind glass screens.

The pawnbroking industry has experienced a revival in recent years due to the recession, lack of credit from high street banks and a backlash against payday loans.

Growth in the market has risen from £248 million in 2006 to £851 million last year – and just over half the customers are women.

Driven by a need for instant cash, around 300 items are pawned at the branch in Upper Parliament Street each month.

Small business owners regularly pawn the same item to solve a short-term cash flow problem – like a builder who needs to buy materials but isn't getting a cheque from a client until later.

With no credit checks, little paperwork and loan funds available straight away,Memory Custom card reader / writer Assorted Colors No Color Choice, the industry asserts it is customers' preferred form of borrowing.

Store manager Louise Hulland said: "Some people buy gold as an investment then pawn it instead of getting an overdraft.

"One guy bought some jewellery and now visits us at the end of the month, he'll pawn the chain and then get it back at the start of the next month.

"We have people coming in for different reasons – new cars, caravans, holidays."

But while many want cash for pleasure, there are cases of hard-up families who are pawning jewellery to kit their kids out with a new school uniform.

Louise said: "Normally it's the latest trainers for PE or new shoes.

"We had one customer come in crying. She didn't have dinner money for her daughter and son at school. She pawned a gold ring to get her kids' dinner money.

"We do hear sad stories now and again but the good outweigh the bad. People want to do something nice with the money rather than needing it badly."

September and October are particular busy with customers pawning items to get cash to buy Christmas presents.

Regional manager Nick Stokes said: "They see us essentially like a bank. They might not have a great credit history, or no bank account and may only want a £100 to £200 loan and the banks won't look at them."

Around 80% of customers in Nottingham do return to reclaim their pawned goods, usually within three to four months.High quality wholesale stainless steel necklace chain with durable color are ideal for wholesale.

Some regulars pawn the same item over and over again. We are always offering best wholesale tungsten bracelet the affordable price.

Mr Stokes said: "The view is sometimes we want to take it and don't want people to come back but that is the opposite. We do everything we can to help customers get it back because it's theirs."

Letters, texts and phone calls remind customers at three, five and six months.

If an item isn't reclaimed at the end of the six-month period, it will go to auction.

Although it's predominately gold, jewellery and watches at H&T branches around the UK, other assets have been pawned.

"In Glasgow they've had a chip fryer – with fat in it," says Mr Stokes. It's about customers using their assets.

"We have been around for over 100 years. Originally we were an old-fashioned pawnbroker and people would bring in a coat or their Sunday best."

Not every customer wants to pawn an item. There are those who want to sell, in which case their ring, watch or necklace,The material of it is wholesale tungsten ring gold, bracelet or earrings, will go on display in the window or shop.

In a telling tale of broken marriages and weddings that never were, quite a few are engagement and wedding rings.

"There's also a lot of old school jewellery. Art Deco things passed down that grandchildren don't want and sovereign rings – we still sell them because people collect them but don't wear them as jewellery," said Louise.

Broken, irreparable items and jewellery with inscriptions are sold for scrap.

Only one per cent of the population have visited a pawn shop and a lot of the other 99% seem to have misconceptions.

Louise said: "My dad had a Charles Dickens image of it. When I took over as store manager he came in and said I can't believe the way it is. The customer left smiling after chatting for five minutes after the transaction had ended.Do travelers need a Custom smart card when exploring Europe?"

The new commercials of online shopping

We have one common laptop between us. I take it to my office in the morning and once I return home, she monopolises it for the rest of the evening - checking mails, networking on Facebook - appreciating hundreds of friends/semi friends on their original/stolen/plagiarised posts, clicking likes on their never-ending changed profiles.

Social networking for her is like an evening stroll - into a community of people whom it is impossible to know well because every day, the friends add acquaintances to this crowd, which has a sort of blanket approval of being a decent crowd.

It is like the old city colonies which were known by the type of people staying at different locations - you don't have to be pally with all of them, but you don't mind exchanging pleasantries.

Facebook replicates this social norm in its own ways - the way one handles the likes, smiles, shares, comments and reciprocate comments and uploads are good enough instruments to calibrate one's social exchanges with members of the digital community. I got used to this pattern of her virtual socialising till I noticed a significant change in her Facebook sojourn. Like all changes, it did not hit me overnight; its manifestation was visible in a different chain of events.

I noticed that the most frequent visitors to my flat in the last couple of months were boys of different courier services delivering goods purchased online. The purchase had no predictable pattern - it varied from a revolving mop to a pack of dangerously shining set of kitchen knives shoved in a multi-slot wooden sheath stand, perfect prop for a murder mystery. One fine morning, I discovered a pack of tummy trimming oil in my shaving corner, with a hand written message (massage). This was too much and needed to be sorted out.

There were other unexplained behaviour patterns, too. Earlier, every purchase would have resulted in a very predictable dialogue pattern. "Let me sLadies and girlstrims no appointment needed!how you what I have bought"; or "Do you like it ...good ... tell me ...na". I suddenly remembered that I had not been receiving indents of purchase messages in my mobile on my way back home. There were also zero requests at the weekends to take her down to some shopping mall for the past couple of months. Suspicion added suspense in the family drama.

I peered over her laptop.the heavily discounted fare for China IC card holders. The Facebook page was replaced by sites like Homeshop 18, FlipKart, Olx. I clearly remembered last year, when she turned down a request to book an air ticket online. "I don't like interacting with machines, there is no human face!" Also, there were those agonising moments when you have made an online payment and all you see is a vortex of uncertainty, spinning with the occasional warning "don't touch the refresh button". And then, everything stops with a penultimate verdict: Internet Explorer can't find the page. Oh my God! What has happened to my money? Has it sunk in the digital ocean?

In the virtual world, you are the only customer. You have complete liberty to toy with idea of buying a brand. You suddenly connect with your larger than life self. The computer screen acts like a magic mirror, a sweat-less world of shopping where base things like haggling for price, extracting a bargain and fear of online payment/exchange are magically removed. You get discounts you can only dream of; the apps tell you which product in which price range is the best value for money and why. You don't need a so-called expert/friend to tell and approve your choice.keep tabs on your hair and makeup with this easy-to-pack Pocket Mirror in pretty prints. And, don't worry about payments. Do it your way.We are always offering best quality stainless steel bracelet supplier the affordable price. Pay on delivery. If you don't like it, return. No questions asked.

Wow! That was a privilege for the rich and famous only a couple of years back. In fact, entire emerging India is salivating on it now, at the threshold of a huge techno-social change silently happening in small town India.

On my way to Roorkee from Delhi, I saw in the city bus stands young people under umbrellas in the scorching sun, selling apps to small town young and middle-aged men and women.

"I make quick bucks from selling apps," said one of them. "The net is full of apps on brands of dresses, accessories, tech products, loans, gadgets - even jewellery. I download them in the customers' comps, show them how to use it and they pay gladly."

People are purchasing electronic gadgets right, left and centre, online. I know a lady who has just brought a Nikon Coolpix camera after downloading an app on cameras. She is completely convinced she could not have a better buy at that price. Ever since she had cross checked the offline price of the model at a Nikon store in Delhi, she has forgotten to stop her smile.

Online is crafting out a new language of relationships. Among the young boys and girls, it is the harbinger of goodies; for them, the new gazal line is "courier aayee hain" and not "chitthi aayee hain".

Guardians and parents - it's time to upgrade yourself; visit your out of station children through Skype. Send your aashirvaad and good wishes online and in kind; they will love it! The other day, I called my daughter and could overhear her roommates whispering "tell your dad to order an online pizza, they will deliver within 20 minutes..Our top picks for the Best Iphone Headset and gear,..got bored with hostel food." The pizza was dutifully ordered by dad from a distance of 2000 km and in the next 20 minutes, saw the Skyped images of girls dancing and eating, and, of course, thanking dear aunty and uncle.

The new commercials of online shopping also portray a new perspective on relationships. Take for instance an eBay commercial. The ad, which features a husband procrastinating about a Sunday shopping spree suggested by the wife, takes an unexpected turn once the wife sees the discounts on eBay. Suddenly, she is all understanding and eager to stay at home, to make most of the online deals.
