watching her friend during the tap lessons
He may not have known it at the time, but
50 years ago Carla Gick’s father touched his daughter’s heart with a simple gift
of tap dancing shoes.
After weeks of attending dance lessons with an elementary school friend, Gick was inspired to become the next Ginger Rogers. Tap dancing lessons were the only way to make that possible and the shoes were obviously essential.
The parents couldn’t afford their middle daughter’s wishes, but that didn’t mean dad,Plain coloured ear cap made from highly elastic allergy-free silicone, Carl Woodard, wasn’t thinking of ways to make his little girl’s dreams come true.
On Christmas morning in 1962, Gick and her sisters opened their gifts to find a Formica slab along with tap-dancing shoes, months after she asked her father for lessons.
“When I saw those shoes, I remember I was just taken aback. Back then, when your parents told you they couldn’t afford something, you didn’t beg them for it. You let it go,” she said, recalling that early Christmas morning. “The whole thing must have weighed on his heart, for him to make my wishes come true anyway. It was so creative! And it ended up being better than what I had originally hoped for.”
With the Formica slab, Gick and her sister didn’t have to worry about heading to a neighborhood studio to tap their way into dancing history. They could use their shoes wherever they wanted to go: the backyard, the garage, the basement.

Throughout Gick’s life, especially after she had three sons of her own, the efforts of her father to find a solution to her tap dancing wishes amazes her.
She’s drawn on his creativity to provide her own children and grandchildren with Christmas gifts, especially during the times when she couldn’t afford the gifts the youngster wanted.
She took one of the boy’s desks and decorated it with tinsel and lights, placing the toys on top.
“I even created a song. ‘Oh, Christmas desk, Oh, Christmas desk ...’” she said. “The boys still remember that, more than any other Christmas.”
The holidays have always been important for Gick and her family and not because of the gifts.
Ironically, it was the giving of the tap dancing shoes that taught her the real significance.
It’s about family, spending time with loved ones and showing others how much you care.
“I just always think about my dad and how much I meant to him if he found a way to make this all come true,” Gick said. “It wasn’t about the shoes. It was about what he did for me. He loved me, and that’s what this is all about.”
