Before the raid, I had visited the zoo
which was charging RM8 per adult per entry.
Though the entrance fee was pricey to me, I still frequented the place as I had grown fond of two tiger cubs in the zoo.
I never met the owner of the zoo, but had on numerous occasion interviewed the caretaker who called himself the Tiger Man.
There were several animals in small cages and, in fact, during one of my trips to the zoo in 2006, I had blogged about how a sun bear shared an adjoining cage with a smelly and dirty wild boar.
To me, it was not right. It is a big no-no to exhibit a sun bear next to a wild boar.
I am not Dr Dolittle (a fictitious character who can talk to animals in a series of children's books written by Hugh Lofting) but in my observations, the sun bear seemed troubled and under stress, while the boar seems quite content to roll in its own faeces and mud, to cool itself in the humid afternoon.
The zoo smelled bad and most of the animals were suffering from skin disease.
I know that animals pace when they are under stress and most of the animals in the zoo were pacing in their small and filthy cages.
They also looked sickly. Although many of the animals in the zoo were tame, especially the orang utans, tigers, monkeys, and deer, among others, but they appeared unhappy.
During the raid in 2011, I was told that the enforcement officers from the department had conducted several raids before as it was believed that the owner of the zoo had obtained the animals illegally.
It was also caught exhibiting more than the permitted number of protected animals a private zoo was allowed by law.
This, I was told, encouraged poachers and unlicensed hunters to capture animals in the wild to sell to private zoos for a huge profit.
Some of the animals, such as the tigers, were trained to do tricks like cycling and it in learnt that the zoo had also rented out their animals to small petting zoos and fun-fair operators.

It broke my heart to read about it.
