Devika, a third-year fashion design student from Symbiosis, Pune, says that this was the first time that her creations were showcased in a competition. Varied designs, concepts and materials — used creatively by the designers — were showcased as part of the event. The show had a mix of ethnic styles as well as contemporary designs.

Lakshita Goel, a first-year jewellery design student from Jaipur, says, “I have designed a broach-cum-pendant, inspired by the peacock. It is a silver piece in the shape of the bird, with green and blue highlights. I have maintained a pattern wherein the colours go from light to dark. I have also used some precious and semi-precious stones in the piece.”

While some students have had prior experience with such competitions, this was a first time for many. Kavya, a first-year student of jewellery design, was one such participant. “My piece is inspired by Indian tribal art. Indian tribes have some wonderful art and if they go unnoticed, these forms will slowly die. I am very interested in the colours that they use — they are bright and vibrant. The neck piece that I am showcasing today is modelled along these lines. I have used stones like coral and turquoise with various beads. The neck piece is in silver with gold plating,” she describes.

The collection was complemented with jewellery from Premmero. Paired with the ethereal white gowns, the jewellery made quite a statement — from diamond neck pieces studded with rubies and emeralds to diamond tiaras and matching earrings.

Father and son duo Eshwar and Rakesh Pathi, from Pathi Jewellers, say that the show was a great platform for them to exhibit the best that they had. “Today, we are showcasing our ethnic as well as diamond collection. All these pieces have been designed in-house and have a unique blend of contemporary and ethnic design. They have been designed to suit the occasion and enhance the beauty of the bride. We are exhibiting a lot of uncut diamonds. One of our specialities is kundan jewellery,” explains Rakesh.

The gowns were followed by the ethnic section, which had a lot of variety — from anarkalis to heavily-embroidered lehengas teamed with gold and diamond sets. The saris — with elegant embroidery and paired with chunky diamond and gold earrings — stole the show.The evening gown section was attractive. Coupled with right jewellery, the attire was chic and contemporary. A red evening gown with a slit up the side, combined with a matching stone-studded gold set, was an eclectic combination of different styles.

The showstoppers, who were popular radio jockeys of various FM stations, livened up the stage with their presence. The stars of the show, though, were the clothes and jewellery.
