Students at Simpson University in Redding have been turning off cellphones, skipping sleep, not wearing shoes and trying life without electricity as daily challenges to get a better understanding about life in other places.

“It’s definitely an eye-opening experience,” said Dani Perez, 21,We've made comparing the Electricity monitor easy with our at-a-glance chart. a senior majoring in psychology. “You never realize how much you use certain things until you are willing to give them up.”

The 30-Day Challenge, which ended Saturday, was for the 110 Simpson students going on mission trips in the spring and summer. Each day’s challenge was intended to push the students out of their comfort zones. It was up to each to decide which challenges to try and how far to take them.

“It’s whatever would be a challenge for you and what can you practically do,Shop the latest hair flower accessories on the world's largest.” Perez said.Australian business bringing a new class of affordable and quality Laser engraver and laser cutting machines.

She took the challenges seriously. Going without shoes came on a day when the ground was “ice cold,” she said. “It definitely wasn’t the easiest. It made walking kind of hard.”

Her most difficult task was the one-day break from speech. “I had to go the whole day without talking,” she said.

Perez, who will go to El Salvador this summer, said many of the challenges were giving up materialistic things. “You see what it would be like to live without these things,” she said.

Sarah Bourns, coordinator of student missions at Simpson, said the challenges help get students in the right mind set for their mission trips.

“We want them to be humble. We want them to come as learners and servants, not as heroes who know it all,” she said.

“It really does feed into our students’ growth,” she said. “They come back and they have such a bigger world view and perspective, and that helps them in all their classes.”

The wrap-up to the 30-Day Challenge was a 30-hour fast that began Friday and ended Saturday night. During that stretch Simpson students took part in a variety of activities, including an airport simulation to give them a glimpse of what it will be like to go through Customs.

On Saturday morning teams of students visited Alzheimer’s patients, raked school softball fields, helped with a food drive and took part in other projects in Redding.

The purpose was to remind the students that “we don’t just serve in places like Africa, we serve here as well,” Bourns said.

The final event, where the students broke their fast, was an Indian street market created in Simpson’s dining center that featured booths, incense and Indian food.
