The shield is awarded to the province which racks up the most points across both the elite and national age group championships.

Auckland held a narrow lead ahead of Southland following the elite championships in Invercargill last month but a hefty haul of medals from the Southland junior and masters riders at the age group championships ensured Southland claimed the honour for an astonishing sixth successive year.

The award is a credit to what the velodrome has done in Invercargill since it was built and to the development work done by Cycling Southland staff and volunteers.

The advantage of having the championships in Invercargill also helped as Southland had 69 riders compete in the age group championships, with Canterbury the next biggest team with 30.

Southland finished with 138 points, ahead of Auckland with 97 and Canterbury with 62.

In a nice touch, the trophy was received on Saturday night by Southland's youngest and oldest riders at the event, Lucy Dawkes and Piet Grandiek.

Southland continued what had been a great week with more medals on the final night.

The Southland women's under-17 sprint team of Makayla Smith and Emma Cumming picked up silver although some Cycling Southland officials questioned whether they had actually won.

The ride for gold went to Erin Criglington and Jacqui Dearlove in 38.460sec, ahead of Sam Kopae and Cherie Champion's 39.720sec.

Nicola Stevens and Kerry Cox won bronze in the ride for third against Sonya Barton and Marie Muhl.
