Freefall into bottomless abyss

Now that I have time on my hands, I have been giving more attention to the Malta-based pages in Facebook and the first reflection is the amount of time so many people spend on it. I have time to burn but many are still gainfully employed, have family responsibilities, have children and run homes. Where and how do they find the time?

I have trudged through hundreds of pages and profiles and have admired the number of gays, lesbians, transvestites, transgenders and cross-dressers who have publicly outed themselves. At least, they are true to themselves and are showing it, following their hormonal instincts and, as a consequence, their lifestyle. They are portraying themselves as themselves.

There is a fair sprinkling of elderly people and family-oriented persons showing their holiday snaps, their wedding day, their kiddy snaps and general homeliness.

I am no prude but there is a definite delineation between what passes as tasteful or tasteless and there is definitely an outstanding proportion of generally tasteless exhibits – and they are not confined to the younger generations either, with many a plump and over-ripe specimen willing to show off their fleshy goods to the full.Modern dry cleaning machine can dramatically reduce exposures,

What fascinates me in these pages is the hypocritical length that some people (mostly females) use to present themselves in their photo albums. These start cleanly enough with various religious themes showing Our Lady of Sorrows, rosary beads, pictures of Jesus Christ and a proliferation of statues of parish and village saints.Shop the best travel luggage tag online.

These are then followed by family pictures: mums, dads, uncles, weddings, parties as well as their young offspring.

When you scroll further down, however, the real meat begins to emerge and most of it just falls short of being pornographic or, at least, pictures and poses that one would more associate with adult film actors and actresses!

Sadly enough, the tastelessness does not end there. Hen parties are popular, with a plethora of pictures of the hen to be and her fellow hens proudly displaying effigies of massive male organs – among other things. All good, clean fun … well it depends I suppose.

Alcohol features frequently with bottles of vodka, beer, wine and whisky being held in high display. A panorama of tattoos is broadly displayed but the greatest culture shock are the finger displays of some of the poses.

Young men love to bare their chests and muscles, a cinemascope of tattoos, horrible views of piercing and the par-for-the-course finger displays together with general drunken rowdiness and loutishness.

More disturbingly, some so-called parents have ‘kindly’ permitted pages for their young children, mostly underaged girls dressed as tarts, plastered with cosmetics and wearing adult clothing, the dreadful ultimate in totally bad taste.

And to think that at that age so many years ago I was still engrossed in reading Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe.
