Researcher Stuart Williams is not talking about a far-off, science-fiction effort when he describes how scientists will create new, functioning human hearts — using cells and a 3-D printer.

The project is among the most ambitious in the growing field of three-dimensional printing that some say could revolutionize medicine.

“We think we can do it in 10 years — that we can build, from a patient’s own cells, a total ‘bioficial’ heart,” said Williams, executive and scientific director of the Cardiovascular Innovation Institute. The institute is a collaboration between the University of Louisville and the Jewish Heritage Fund for Excellence.

Known for creating products as diverse as car parts and action figures, 3-D printing also is being used to create models of human bones and organs, medical devices, personalized prosthetics and now, human tissues. Williams describes the process as taking a three-dimensional structure “and essentially cloning it, using a printer.”

“Bioprinting is pretty much done everywhere,” said Dr. Anthony Atala, director of the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in North Carolina, where scientists recently won an award for innovations in bioprinting. “Our ultimate goal is increasing the number of patients who get organs.”

When the music stopped and the 48 people working out for charity Sunday afternoon were given a short break, their celebrity instructor walked around and high-fived a few of the boys and girls, who had beads of sweat pouring off their foreheads.

At the second break, reigning Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco, an Audubon High School graduate, was so tired that he dropped to the ground and sat up against a wall huffing and puffing.

“When you weigh 80 pounds, it doesn’t do as much as when you weigh as much as I do,” Flacco joked after going through a 45-minute charity workout at Evolution Fitness that raised $3,500 for Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “The stuff we did was more of a cardio-type thing and a lot of those kinds of things I’ll do at the beginning of my workout before I get into some of the lifting.”

Flacco, who will receive his Super Bowl ring this week, has been going through voluntary offseason training sessions with the Ravens. As he gets set to return to those practices this week, the 28-year-old took time out of his schedule to be that role model for young kids.

“We were all those guys at some point and we all had dreams,” said Flacco, who has homes in Baltimore, Florida and South Jersey. “That’s what’s great about being a kid. You can see the optimism in their eyes and the way they take things. You always get motivation from seeing young kids just come out and run around.”

Flacco loves kids. Married since June 2011, he already has an 11-month-old son, Stephen, and his wife currently is pregnant with the couple’s second child.
