Marvin Lovell Norris Jr., 19, of Havelock, is charged with felony larceny from a person, possession of a stolen firearm, resisting a public officer, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus.

Norris is in the Craven County Jail under a $20,000 bond.

Norris was involved in the fatal shooting of Demetri Shavar Berry, 28, of Havelock, on Nov. 17 at Kelly Park Apartments in Havelock. Norris was not charged in Berry’s death after the district attorney’s office ruled based on a Havelock police investigation that Norris was defending himself in a locked apartment when Berry and another man, Marcus Anthony Nunes, 24, of Havelock, broke into the home intent on assaulting Norris.

According to Havelock police, Berry and Nunes were after Norris because they believed he had broken into their homes.

Cyrus said Hill was present at the time of Berry’s shooting.

Havelock police received a 911 call at 4:51 p.m. Wednesday from a man saying he had been robbed at the Pine Villa Apartments on Brown Boulevard in Havelock and that he was following the suspects on McCotter Boulevard, Cyrus said.

Havelock police located the suspect vehicle, a 2001 Nissan Sentra, with Hill behind the wheel.

The car sped away, turned right on Fontana Boulevard and headed east on N.C. 101 at a speed of 100 mph, with Havelock officer Kim Tutwiler in lead pursuit followed by Officer James Macroberts, Cyrus said.

“The officers that were involved in the pursuit said they did encounter some traffic, but other than the speed, no one was endangered, according to the officers,” Cyrus said. “We backed off on Highway 101 hoping that he would ease off on his speed but he never did.”

Hill stopped the car in front of 1002 Temples Point Road, and he and two occupants fled into the woods, Cyrus said. Havelock police chased the men on foot and Macroberts was able to catch Norris.
