For Sevan Bicakci, a mix of motivation, enthusiasm and creativity lead to inspiration. An Istanbulite at heart, Bicakci grew up in the ancient neighbourhood of Samatya, a heartbeat away from the Topkapi Palace, the royal residence of the Ottoman Sultans for centuries. Working with an ingenuity that is quite rare, the virtuoso takes about half a year to create a piece; sometimes it takes him an entire year. Chiselling diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, moonstones and aquamarine into shape, Bicakci swears by dexterity. “Craftsmanship is a very delicate business. It requires patience. I don’t believe in finishing a product in two days because I am quite distinctive with regard to time. Only when I reach the desired results, I feel satisfied,” Bicakci avers. It is perhaps this perfection that has made his designs true collector’s items. From Sevan’s colourful workshops, where his apprentices hammer away at micro mosaics, he produces stunning art that is wearable.
