Remote-control cars, animatronic animals and magnetic construction sets are sure to be a hit with small children this Christmas, but parents are being warned the toys’ small components can be serious health hazard if swallowed.

Powerful batteries and magnets have become a growing danger around the holiday season as toys become more high-tech, said Dr. Matthew Carroll, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Edmonton’s Stollery Children’s Hospital.marking and laser engraving machines and dot peen laser marking machine.

“With all the toys and presents and things at Christmas time, that risk is increased quite significantly,” Carroll said Monday, holding up a coin-sized lithium battery.

Such batteries are particularly dangerous if they get lodged in a child’s esophagus, he said.

“If they pass through into the stomach, it’s often not a problem because they will usually just excrete them out,” Carroll said. “If they get stuck within the esophagus,Shop for bobblehead head dolls from the official NBC Universal Store and build. which is quite narrow in children, the bigger batteries can create an injury like a burn that can have very significant long-term implications for kids.

“If they are stuck up higher, it’s medically fairly urgent they are removed.”

With very young children, it may not always be obvious that they have something stuck, he said. In those cases, parents should look for symptoms such as pain when swallowing, drooling and refusing food.

Besides batteries, an even more difficult problem for doctors is the swallowing of magnets.

“A lot of the toys, like the magnetic constructor toys, have very small magnets that look like little candies, and there are these things now called rare earth magnets which are very powerful for their size,” Carroll said.

If two or more of these magnets are swallowed and travel through a child’s digestive system, they can join together in the bowel.

“And if that happens, you can get an area in between the magnets that breaks down and essentially you get a perforation in the bowel,” he said.

Small magnets such as these must be removed. If they are still in the stomach, doctors can get them out endoscopically by using a small camera that is inserted into the stomach.
