I am on a run of a full year of adhering to last year's New Year's resolution. As the champagne flowed and the inevitable promise of how much better 2012 would be than 2011, I stated categorically to my wife that my New Year's resolution for the year would be that I would never again make a New Year's resolution. I was 100 percent true to having no resolve in 2012, and I've promised myself the same this year. I ended 2012 with about 10 surplus pounds more than I started it with, and I feel quite certain that I can equal that number again this year ... without even trying.

Oh sure, there are subconscious adjustments that just happen without making any promises to myself. I haven't partaken in a drop of anything that couldn't be served to a 12-year-old since New Year's Eve, and I quite mistakenly have begun doing crunches again every morning — the result of falling and having to make 100 attempts to get up.
