A GROUP of traders along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and Jalan Dhoby in the city recently organised a charity event called JB Calling -- Positive Vibration to help children from the Grace Covenant Children Home.

The event was held at The Red House building belonging to the Johor Baru Tionghua Association, which is in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.

The home houses orphans as well as those from broken families in Taman Desa Tebrau here.

Event co-organisor, Kevin Soh, from Eats n Beats said that the event was held because traders wanted to contribute back to society.

Soh said the traders got to know about the home in January.

"One of our fellow organisers, Elvis Long, initiated the event.

"This is the first time that such an event was held in the area," he said.

Soh said the event aimed at fostering ties between the business community and the home.

"This will also strengthen the bond among ourselves besides hyping-up the business area as we have junkyard sale and entertainment. The sale was organised by Ireen Tan," he said.

Forty children from the home aged between 5 and 17 were brought to the building by their guardians, Joshua Ng, who is the founder of the home, and his wife, Ruth Kam, who is the principal.

"The toddlers go to Superkids Kindergarten in Taman Desa Tebrau. Those aged 7 to 12 go to SJK (C) Foon Yew (5) in Taman Mount Austin,Specialized in manufacturing Laser engraver system for laser marking, while secondary students are home-schooled," said Kam.

The traders donated some of the profits from the bazaar to the home.

Kuri Handmade Leather Bags owner, Nina Lai, said she found out about the charity event through friends and decided to join in.

"It was for a good cause, so I decided to lend a hand.High quality stainless steel necklace chain with durable color. The amount that I gave to the children's home depended on how well the business was," she said.

Lai makes handbags and purses online from leather and wool.

She also sells little statues, drawers and other decorative items.

Hair stylist and salon proprietor Serence Teo, who runs her business in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, contributed to the home by giving discounted haircuts.

"We only charge RM30 for a haircut. This is only 50 per cent of what we normally charge. All the money will go towards charity," she said.

Besides the charity sales, there were also performances by the children, music bands and a percussion group.

The bands that performed were The Amanda Tee, The Dugong Warriors and JB Buskers.promoting wind power in Europe and wind turbine .
