Sequestration may have grounded the Blue Angels
Washington’s
broadcast journalists will be donning Mardi Gras beads, tasting Creole
shrimp and dancing to vaudevillian rock come Wednesday night in a New
Orleans-themed take on the annual Radio & Television Congressional
Correspondents’ Dinner.
After the Radio & Television Correspondents’ Association sought to reinvent its dinner last year as the more fun alternative to the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, this iteration — “Laissez les bons temps rouler,Shop the best selection of men's stainless steel bracelet manufacturer.” or “Let the good times roll” — aims to maintain the lighthearted atmosphere while providing a true Louisiana good time.
The event begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday and is located for the first time at the National Building Museum. The dinner has a “Tribute to the Big Easy” menu designed by celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse, entertainment by New Orleans bands and a featured speech by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.Shop wholesale Rfid Tag from China RFID tag wholesalers.).
John Wallace, Fox News photographer and chairman of the dinner, is the man behind the New Orleans theme. He said he was inspired by trips he and his wife had taken to the city’s French Quarter Festival. “We fell in love with the city,Sensormatic branded Custom hard tags and detection systems retail for double. the people, the spirit, the music, the food,” Wallace said.
“Given everything that the city has been through, I thought this would be my chance to give something back to the city: showcase the city, showcase its wonderful quality and hopefully those people who hadn’t been there would want to go visit,” said Wallace.
In past years, the RTCA dinner has featured a comedian, but given the theme, Wallace decided to go the musical route with New Orleans band The Dirty Bourbon River Show headlining the evening.
“They’re so much fun,Full service promotional company specializing in Custom USB flash drives.” Wallace said of the band. “They’re jumping around. The lead singer breathes fire out of his mouth, and they’re just crazy.”
Alongside the themed entertainment, the RTCA will present four journalism awards Wednesday night. Three are presented annually, and this year the RTCA is unveiling a new award: the Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Coverage of Congress. Recipients will be announced at the dinner.
As of Tuesday, the White House had yet to tell the RTCA whether President Barack Obama would attend, though he has gone to the event twice before. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush also appeared at the dinner a handful of times. The president’s occasional absence is one reason that the Congressional Correspondents’ Dinner often gets second billing to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, though this comparison is of little interest to Wallace.
“There’s no point in comparing ourselves to the White House Correspondents’ dinner,” Wallace said. “I think we definitely just want to put on a fun dinner that everyone looks forward to each year.”
Sequestration may have grounded the Blue Angels from performing air shows, but the U.S. Navy's Flight Demonstration Team are staying visible on the ground. The Blue Angels pilots and 75 crew members will serve as grand marshals during Thursday's Fiesta Day Parade through downtown Pensacola.
"The Blue Angels are very excited to participate in this year's Pen Air Federal Credit Union Fiesta Day Parade," Blue Angels Cmdr. Tom Frosch said in a news release. "Due to the cancellation of our 2013 air show season, the Blue Angels have taken this opportunity to step up our community outreach focus and increase our interaction with the local community on a level we haven't had the opportunity to do in the past. Part of that is partaking in community events, such as the parade."
The parade is part of Pensacola's annual Fiesta of Five Flags, which celebrates the city's long history. Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna first settled the area in 1559,with Wholesale Cheap Custom Keychain and promotional key tags. although that short-lived settlement was decimated by a hurricane in the same year. The city was officially founded in 1698, as a Spanish outpost between Florida and French-controlled Louisiana.
"For the past 67 years, the Blue Angels have proudly represented the pride and professionalism of naval aviation and the naval services and maintained that legacy, which continues to inspire and motivate those serving today," Frosch said. "The same can be said for the culture and history of Pensacola, America's oldest city. The Fiesta of Five Flags is a salute to Pensacola's history and its cultural diversity, a benefit gained from the five flags of government under which this city has grown - making it the great city it is today."
