The uniqueness of the drive has a particular resonance

School teacher Katie Starczewski, like most teachers, is always looking for that
teachable moment, or that activity that will connect her students' classroom
experience with the world outside those schoolroom windows.
"I'm always looking for opportunities for my students to get involved beyond themselves, to get involved in their community," she said.
Ms. Starczewski found just such an activity in a shoe drive called Feet Need Shoes, which seeks to collect 200,000 pairs of new or gently used shoes for folks in need all over the world through an organization called Soles4Souls.
The uniqueness of the drive has a particular resonance for her seventh-grade students, Ms. Starczewski said.
"My age group is obsessed with the kinds of shoes they wear. They love their shoes. And we've talked a lot about up cycling, recycling," she said.
Ms. Starczewski said it's also something that they can do that doesn't involve raising money. All they have to do is go to their closet and realistically assess whether they need one of the many pairs of shoes there.
She also encourages her students to imagine what it would be like not to have the abundant resources they possess.
Burncoat Middle isn't the only school or church in the area participating in the shoe drive. Many schools, churches and charity groups are involved after being approached by Feet Need Shoes' energetic organizer, local business owner Alex Diaz.
Mr. Diaz brought the Soles4Souls movement to the area after a life-changing experience in 2009.
That summer, he took a cruise to the Caribbean and stepped off a luxurious cruise ship into the abject poverty of the residents of a small Caribbean island.
The lesson wasn't lost on Mr. Diaz, who has a keen sense of gratitude for all the blessings in his own life, and an equal desire to give back.promoting wind power in Europe and wind turbine .
In 2009, Mr. Diaz, who runs UPS stores in Holden, Auburn, Westboro and Worcester, learned about the organization Soles4Souls, based in Tennessee, and thought its mission was something many people could probably get behind.
He began a shoe drive locally to help that organization, with its mission to provide shoes to those who had none.
It was a simple mission, and one Mr. Diaz thought everyone could probably get behind, a concrete goal and a gift that could be given by simply taking a walk to one's closet.
That initial drive had the ambitious goal to raise 100,000 pairs of shoes. For many months, Mr. Diaz's business storerooms were filled with case after case of shoes. When the final tally was made, it was clear Mr. Diaz's message had gotten through -- that drive raised more than 120,000 pairs of shoes.High quality stainless steel necklace chain with durable color.
"People kept asking," he said. "Every week we had someone coming with shoes, and we weren't even collecting them anymore."
Last fall, Mr. Diaz recalls, his partner Jamie Salisbury urged him to reconsider some kind of project,The Athenian ownfigurine is an artefact and one of the relics in Tomb Raider Anniversary. and as part of a family New Year tradition, Mr. Diaz once again set a goal: This time, he'd collect 200,000 pairs.
"Our goal is to help as many people as we can," he said.

In addition to giving shoes (and his goal is one donation per student), they're helping out sorting and packaging the shoes.
Though Mr. Diaz is an inspiring and energetic speaker about the cause, Feet Need Shoes' mission statement says it all: "We are a group of people who believe that through compassion and caring, we can help create hope for others! We call ourselves 'Ambassadors of Hope.' We pledge our support to all people who need encouragement and to those who have lost hope. We encourage others to make a difference."
