Bands played new and classic Carnival calypso music and even mixed in a few popular hits for a bit of flavor.

The parade was filled with a long list of Carnival royalty, including this year's Carnival Princess, 11-year-old LaZonique Phillip, a sixth-grader at Ulla Muller Elementary School. Other princes and princesses from schools and community organizations across St. Thomas also were represented as royalty in the parade.

Speakers were piled high on the trucks, sending booming sounds over the crowd, vibrating the streets and nearby buildings to the rhythm of the music.

As the music played, the groups wowed the crowds along the streets with dance routines, which they have been practicing for months.

Majorette groups, always a crowd favorite, were a sure hit as they showed off their beautifully designed and tailored outfits and displayed their baton twirling skills and dance numbers.

Her skills and talent definitely have an old world vibe about them; in fact many of her techniques are ancient and date back hundreds of years.
She has been making jewellery for the past 10 years and has done various short courses such as gem setting; an advanced diploma in engineering technology in Melbourne and trained with a jeweller for three years in her home country, the United Kingdom.

"I love making jewellery. I wanted to take it further. I felt that there was more to do and that is when I started my small business."
Her Advanced Diploma of Engineering Technology was intense and didn't have a real artistic focus. Instead, it was more about techniques and learning how to make jewellery.

"I do a lot of printing onto metal, with different fabrics and materials that are printed on a surface with a rolling press.
"Another technique is Keum Boo where you burnish hot gold foil onto the surface of silver and it is a permanent bond."
She said she didn't see herself as an artist but more of a craftsperson, and the making of a piece was what drove her, more than the design aspect.
"The design part is important, but quite often I will make a piece because I am interested in a particular technique, so I create the design around the technique," she said.
Originally from Brighton on the south coast of England, Mrs Maynard moved to Australia five years ago with her husband.
It was 15 years before that the couple travelled to Australia and fell in love with the place.
The couple are now Australian citizens and recently moved from Melbourne to Mackay.
She said working part-time in the gift shop at Artspace and making her creations has helped her make connections with her new community.
Mrs Maynard's parents were creative, with her dad, who was a mechanic, doing brilliantly at woodwork, and her mum who made her wedding dress.
"We had an upbringing where we were always making something, sewing or making things out of cardboard," she said.
"That is why I was so interested in jewellery because I love the process of making something.
"I remember watching my dad in his workshop when I was young and it has rubbed off on me trying to emulate that skill."
Many of the techniques that Mrs Maynard uses have Asian influences that are hundreds of years old, which are slowly becoming more mainstream.
"They are ancient techniques which are not used very much in the west these days," she said.
Her style is modern and linear.
"I like simple geometric shapes," she said.
"Quite often I make things that have a bold shape, a geometric shape, and I embellish those things with a texture, or bold contrast.
"Other times I get a fine piece of wire and twist it then solder it to the surface."
She said you had to have patience to be a metalsmith, because you spent hours working on one piece quite intensely.
"My particular style is a reflection of who I am. I am a perfectionist. It is the way I see things and I can't do things in a disorderly way," she said.

Gold price fall may aid designers and affect jewellery

Theft of jewellery has risen by 22 per cent in two years, according to Churchill, the UK insurance group. A growing number of cash-for-gold services has made it easier for thieves, encouraged by the soaring price of gold in recent years, to sell stolen jewellery. Churchill even urged householders to update their home contents insurance cover saying increased gold prices made it more likely their jewellery was undervalued.

But last week saw gold suffer its steepest price decline in 30 years. Already in Asia, demand for jewellery and gold bars has spiked. MKS Capital, which runs one of Switzerland’s biggest gold refineries and supplies Asia, said it had sold out and predicted a delivery time of two weeks to fulfil new orders.

Andrea Morante, CEO of Pomellato, welcomed the news. “Hopefully, the losers in this situation will be the speculators and hedge fund managers who have gambled on gold and helped introduce instability for industries that depend on gold as a raw material,” he says.

If prices stabilise or continue to drop, large jewellery manufacturers will pay less for the material they use. Small, young and independent designers will feel less constrained by their basic outlay costs.

In recent years, to combat rising gold prices that have coincided with recession, many jewellers introduced silver collections, including Gurhan, a Turkish designer based in New York, who is famous not just for his Hollywood following but for previously working exclusively with 24-carat gold. Others created gold lattice, filigree and lace styles that demanded less precious metal.

Alisa Moussaieff, owner of the Moussaieff store on Bond Street, admits the recent plunge in the price of gold is “definitely significant”. In India and certain parts of the Middle East and elsewhere in Asia, some jewellery is valued by its weight in gold, which means prices changed immediately. But Moussaieff maintains that, at the very high end, prices will remain unaffected because precious gems make up a far higher proportion of the value. Furthermore, big brands are unlikely to drop their prices because a fall would devalue the perception of their pieces.

Duncan Semmens, director of London’s Burlington Arcade and jewellery dealers Hancocks, says: “Our jewellery is valued for its historical and artistic qualities and our clients aren’t buying these pieces simply for the sum of their parts.”

In Geneva in May, a solid gold trophy on a malachite base made by Bulgari, which once belonged to Gina Lollobrigida, star of the 1956 film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, will go on the block at Sotheby’s. The piece is estimated to fetch between $50,000 and $80,000. “Prices at auction are rarely determined solely by the gold price – many factors contribute, not least of all provenance,” says David Bennett, Sotheby’s chairman of jewellery for Europe and the Middle East. “Although the estimate was based on the gold value, the Gina Lollobrigida provenance and the uniqueness of the object will obviously play a significant role in what it realises on the night.”

Even so, Fran?ois Curiel, international head of jewellery at Christie’s, says prices of gold jewellery in smaller auctions are immediately adjusted to reflect the current price of gold. “Nevertheless, over a five-year period, the price of gold has appreciated more than 45 per cent,” he says.

Most customers will not benefit from reduced prices for jewellery and watches because wholesale jewellers set their prices for the season, according to Marisa Horden, owner of Missoma, a jewellery brand sold in 12 countries and popular with the likes of Jennifer Lopez.

While gold’s price was soaring, many found it more profitable and appealing to scrap their gold jewellery than to wear it,High quality stainless steel necklace chain with durable color. or even sell it as jewellery. But in Hatton Garden, London’s diamond district, last week, one jeweller saw an immediate reaction from clients who came in to invest in gold by the kilo.

“Within two days of the news breaking that gold had dropped $200 an ounce, I sold several kilos to clients who are shrewd investors. They paid about £30,000 a kilo and maintain that while their money in the bank isn’t showing interest, gold is still a safe bet,” says Lewis Malka, managing director of bespoke jewellers Joseph Sterling. About 20 per cent of Mr Malka’s business is now made up of buying and selling gold.

Liv Ballard, the Los Angeles designer, counts Elton John among her regular clients. “Whether at $600 a troy ounce when I began designing or closer to $1,400 as it is today, warm gold jewellery and precious stones will always make a comforting insurance policy – the first thing tossed into the pillow case if one has to flee into the night,” she says.

The British fashion industry is valued at £21bn a year, while UK fine jewellery is worth £3.2bn according to Mintel, the market research group, so the scale of help for beginners is different.

Mr Webster is involved with LFW as the curator of Rock Vault, a showcase for rising jewellers who already have a flourishing business.

“Seven have accepted and it will be great exposure for them, with more impact from showing their great talent as a group.”

It is, he says, an experiment that he hopes will flourish because a consistent presence is seen as important by potential buyers.

“You have to go back to any trade fair several times before you sell,” agrees designer William Cheshire, who has been on trade missions to France and Germany and has just opened his first shop in east London’s up-and-coming Broadway Market.

There are a number of useful small-scale initiatives to support young designers from graduation onwards, but they are concerned mainly with the home market, and channel young designers towards one of several disparate exhibitions.

International Jewellery London (IJL) in September, Rock Vault at Fashion Week and the Jewellery Show (in Birmingham in February and London in June) are entirely trade while London Jewellery Week, in venues across the capital, sells direct to the customer as does the Goldsmiths Fair, also for bespoke commissions, in late September. Goldsmiths also now runs a selling fair for younger designers and clients, this year in late June.

This fragmented structure is, says one observer, “due to vested interests”, and the support structure, though wide ranging, is equally fragmented.

Mr Cheshire says he received “quite brilliant” help from Holts Academy’s Design Competition, and that such private sources are essential since public funding has now all but dried up.

The Holts competition channels designers towards IJL, as does Bright Young Gems (backed by the British Jewellers’ Association), which mentors and gives show space to recent graduates and is being extended nationally, and Kickstart, which helps designers who already have a fledgling business.

Della Tinsley, director of London Jewellery Week, says: “We are giving space to young talents at each of our venues, which all have their own character, from the established and design-orientated at Treasure [jewellery show], young and edgier at Jewel East in Spitalfields and more craft style at Greenwich Market.”

Winner of a free stand at Treasure is Lestie Lee, who has also benefited from the Kickstart programme. Both IJL and London Jewellery Week are working with starter programmes around the country, such as the Vanilla Ink incubator workshop in Scotland.

Bec Astley Clarke, the successful online jewellery entrepreneur, agrees that “we have a responsibility to put something back – young designers are dependent on private initiatives now”.

She has set up a new mentoring award in all aspects of the industry for graduates with Holts and gives a Gold Award to a chosen “Bright Young Gem” to collaborate on a project with her brand.

The Goldsmiths’ Centre, which opened a year ago in purpose-built premises funded by Goldsmiths’ Company, houses 15 established businesses alongside low-rent starter studios for graduates and the week-long Getting Started courses that the company has run for 30 years.

It is, says director Peter Taylor, “still embryonic, but designers here get an overview and experience of all aspects of the industry. There are craftsmen training as well as designers and CAD [computer-aided design] experts – everything to help the future of a British industry which still has its skills.”

But he regrets “the lack of coherent strategy on tackling the global market over the past five or so years. We have become more focused on bespoke work here, though that is also positive.”

Imogen Belfield, who did a Goldsmiths Getting Started course and has received both Bright Young Gems and Kickstart awards, shows her designs at Rock Vault and is joining the Vegas trip. “I’ve had a lot of help all through, first with understanding the business, then with exhibition stands, press material and so on”, she says.High quality stainless steel necklace chain with durable color.

Now, she says, she feels ready to export and would like to join the upmarket Première Classe show in Paris, but cannot afford it.

Meanwhile IJL, which last year attracted buyers from 64 countries, is in discussion with another Vegas fair, JCK, about a reciprocal arrangement.

While we of course cannot take high growth

If they do, they will see that today we are at a moment of historic opportunity. For the end of absolute poverty, a dream which has enticed and driven humanity for centuries, is now within our grasp.

In recent decades the world has made impressive progress in the fight against poverty, a fact too often lost in the headlines of immediate crisis conditions. On the strength of robust private sector growth underpinned by improved economic governance, today extreme poverty is in retreat across the developing world. In 1990, 43% of the developing world lived on less than $1.25 a day. The World Bank estimates that by 2010 this figure had dropped to 21%. The first Millennium Development Goal, to halve extreme poverty, was achieved five years ahead of time.

But we will be there to help. We will work with our partners to share knowledge on solutions to end poverty. We will closely monitor and observe progress toward this goal, reporting annually on what has been achieved and where gaps remain. And we will use our convening and advocacy power to continually remind policymakers and the international community what is at stake.

By acting today, there is an opportunity to create a world for our children which is defined not by stark inequities but by soaring opportunities. We can and must achieve a world free of poverty.

Redevelopment of the Newman Brothers building

The Newman Brothers Coffin Fitting Works in Fleet Street has secured the cash from the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (GBSLEP) through its allocation from the Growing Places Fund.

The investment will allow the Birmingham Conservation Trust, which took ownership of the building in 2010, to create new commercial units at the property. The three-storey building will also become the trust's head office.

"The Newman Brothers building is a historical gem and I'm delighted the deal could be struck for the Growing Places Fund to bring it back into use," said Paul Heaven, GBSLEP board director and chairman of the Growing Places Fund committee.

"This is a scheme that is ready to go and can,The officials to inquire the possibility of using solar panels for solar street lamps. in a relatively short period of time, be delivering jobs and growth opportunities and I would like developers who have similar schemes that might benefit from Growing Places funding to come forward."

Redevelopment of the Newman Brothers building has been in the offing for more than a decade and was previously owned by the now defunct regional development agency Advantage West Midlands.

In addition to the latest funding from the GBSLEP, the Birmingham Conservation Trust has been awarded cash from Birmingham City Council, English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund to help complete the project.
